This is, of course, referencing the move to do backwards compatibility via software instead of hardware. Quite a bit of controversy with that one, wasn’t there?

Yes, there was. At first, all PS2 backwards compatibility was removed for newer models of the PS3, with software emulation coming in later. However, this move to a software-based solution led to a lot of uncertainty over what games worked well with it. As such, PS3s with hardware-based backwards compatibility became (and still are) highly prized items.
